Southern
Comfort 2001- A vivid portrait of the late trans man Robert Eads and
his loved ones. The local Ku Klux Klan group was so taken in by the
bearded Eads’s good-old-boy ambience, they asked him to join. Eads
had less luck with the 20 doctors who refused to treat him for cancer
of the cervix and ovaries, proving that for the transgender community
at least, it’s Bessie Smith all over again. The irony of his
condition—that he was dying from the only part left in him that was
truly female—was not lost on Eads.
Transgender Revolution 2001- INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS ™ televised on A&E. goes beyond
ignorance and stereotypes for an intimate portrayal of the people who
choose to change their sexuality. Among the unexpected, ferociously
articulate characters we meet are a female-to-male transsexual (Toney
Baretto-Neto) who works for the Tampa sheriff's office, a
male-to-female electrical designer who has hosted an MIT radio show
called Gendertalk, and a Southern good-old-boy ("Terry"
Nick's friend) who we follow through his surgical transformation. THE
TRANSGENDER REVOLUTION also examines the fast-growing movement to
combat gender oppression, highlighting the nation's most notorious
transsexual killings and a Congressional battle over including
transsexuals in the Hate Crimes Act. Featuring interviews with the
founder of the transsexual political organization GenderPAC and a
noted neurosurgeon specializing in sex change operations, this is a
surprising portrayal of a misunderstood, growing subculture.
You Don't Know Dick: Courageous Hearts of
Transsexual Men 1998(?) - Review from an
anonymous person, "Simply put, this is the most profound,
compelling, and thought-provoking documentary ever made on gender
identity. It may also be the most entertaining. It provides
extraordinarily honest and riveting portraits of six men who once were
women."
Changing Sexes:
Female to Male 2003 - Discovery Channel
- Mention the word "transsexual," and many imagine a man in
a dress. But transsexuals are actually one gender who becomes the
other. In this program, meet four women who have become, or are
currently transitioning to, men. And, though their numbers are fewer
than the reverse, their story is no less fascinating. Meet Jamison,
who transitioned 12 years ago. Today, his full beard, deep voice and
twinkling green eyes make it hard to believe he was ever a woman.
Rachael, on the other hand, is just beginning her transition and still
living as a woman. Follow her through her first radical change towards
"manhood" – surgery to have her breasts removed. Dirk, who
started life as Emily, lives in a small town in the Midwest, where he
fears that certain social factors may make him the target of violent
crime. Finally, meet Scott (formerly Caroline) who tells a harrowing
tale of how he completed his transition with a unique female-to-male
surgery – the creation of an artificial phallus.
Hear the profound – and sometimes provocative – stories of these
"transitioners" as told in their own words. And move beyond
the tabloid headlines to explore the moral, social and – most
importantly – emotional questions surrounding this little-understood
phenomenon.
What Sex Am I?
1984 (Features an FTM kicked out of teaching for transitioning on the
job in the 1970's; is now (or was then) a tile setter to earn a
living) Lee Grant directed, wrote and narrates this study of the
gender identity crisis faced by transsexuals and transvestites.
The Opposite Sex: Rene's Story (an FTM) From Showtime in May/June 2004
Rene,
31, a female-to-male gender reassignment candidate took hormones for
years and "passed" as a man for all of his adult life.
Married to his high-school sweetheart, Wona, a heterosexual woman,
for 12 years, no one would guess Rene was biologically a woman.
Living under a veil of secrecy and lies, Rene and Wona's lives
seemed fine until someone "outted" the couple at their
beloved church and everything they knew was destroyed. The public
revelation of Rene's secret starts to unravel his marriage to Wona.
Through all of it, Rene continues to hold on to his lifelong
obsession to become a biological male and goes on a cross-country
search to find the best transgender surgeon, only to discover that
the current surgery options are flawed. At the last minute, Rene
finds a surgeon who has created an experimental procedure, which
will be seen in THE OPPOSITE SEX for the first
time.
Nick's Notes about the Documentary/film:
I was sent a video tape of this program and the
following panel discussion. Best documentary yet about FTM's,
surgery wise, in-depth details about surgery, panel discussions,
opinions of other FTM's, ect... hands down.
This
film is about one man's perceptions of what it's like to be male in
a female body while trying to manage his life, his marriage, his
wife, his family & his hometown's perception of him and his
search for inner peace. I do not give a glowing assessment of Rene,
so be forewarned. Even Trans-Academics site warns this film doesn't
portray FTM's well. MORE...
