NEW Hello Nick,

I just looked at your list of FTM books on www.thetransitionalmale.com/look and was surprised that you don't have Jamison Green's book, Becoming a Visible Man, listed there. Here is a description of the book and some of the comments that readers have posted about it on Amazon.com:

Becoming a Visible Man

By James (Jameson) Green

Gender goes beyond chromosomes, a point broadly knowledgeable transgender activist Green makes early in the compelling, immensely readable story of his FTM (female-to-male: Jamie to Jamison) transsexual experience, from which he emerged fortysomething chronologically yet younger than 20 psychosexually as a consequence of biochemical and surgical sex reassignment. In discussing adjustment to a man's body, Green remarks that those whose bodies originally "match their gender identity take their bodies for granted in the process of identity formation"--a luxury "transgendered and transsexual people don't have." Perhaps nontranssexuals may more easily grasp Green's journey from Jamie to Jamison via the concept of realizing personal integrity, and thereby gain immeasurably from his testimony. Meanwhile, they will be educated by Green's detailed descriptions of available transsexual surgeries--he underwent metoidioplasty, the transformation of female genitalia into a male-appearing organ that, sometimes called a micropenis, is significantly smaller than average for penises, though functionally normal--and by his summary of his expenses since 1989 and his comparison of them to the costs of similar procedures today. The Testosterone Files:

My Hormonal and Social Transformation from Female to Male

By Max Wolf Valerio

NEW

(From Amazon.com)

Max Wolf Valerio crafts a gripping and poetic account of life before, during, and after injecting testosterone. His observations about a lesbian transitioning to a heterosexual male highlights the physical and emotional differences between women and men, and challenges and confirms readers' assumptions about gender.

Valerio presents his story in three parts: the height of his transition, in which he witnesses his increased energy and sex drive while struggling with gaining confidence in his male self and bearing witness to his own demise as a woman; life before testosterone, when as Anita, a self-identified lesbian out for fourteen years, she confronts startling moments of awareness of a deeper, earlier dream of who she really is; and life after testosterone, when the experience of living as a man is at once a homecoming and a confirmation that male behavior is at least partly biologically rooted.

The Testosterone Files addresses transitioning issues, from buying men's underwear to choosing a male name, as well as more profound subjects like male privilege, physical power, and existing as a male who was once distrustful and critical of men's intentions. Valerio's honesty regarding gender, identity, and self-perception comprise the core of this personal and absorbing narrative.

The Mirror Makes No Sense

Mark A. Cummings - Autobiographical

NEW

The Mirror Makes No Sense is a true story of a young man's journey. This is no ordinary man, Mark Angelo Cummings was born biologically a female. He brings the readers into his life, sharing his emotions, trials and tribulations. This book has something for everyone. He will make you laugh, cry and get you to think about your own feelings, towards many controversial subjects. Mark is a spiritual and God loving man. He wants to create awareness of the much needed unconditional love in our world. Mark's question to you is, are you happy with the reflection you see in the mirror? If the answer is yes, then you can feel really blessed, because for some of us though, the mirror makes no sense. Being transsexual is not a sin, a crime, nor deviant behavior. It is however, a birth defect, created at 8 weeks gestation, where the brain and the body failed to communicate. Because of this birth defect there are hate crimes, suicides, family break ups, and overall bigotry amongst religious groups. He hopes you take something from his work, but most of all he prays you open up your hearts and minds, and realize, we are all God's children too.

Morgan in the Mirror by C.C. Saint-Clair

http://www.ccsaint-clair.com/morganinthemirror/

Saint-Clair’s latest novel, Morgan in the Mirror, moves away from her usual lesbian contexts, and tackles the issue of transgenderism – a most relevant matter for the health and survival of humankind because fear of the unfamiliar is part of the global problem of discrimination against ‘the other’.

If our survival as a community is based on our ability to become compassionate, accepting human being capable of caring for each other, even in the absence of understanding, then Saint-Clair tests our readiness by giving us Morgan and the challenge his personal circumstances present to the world.

Gender and sexuality have never been frozen in binary oppositions of either/or, but have always existed as mere stations along a rich and gloriously multicoloured continuum.

Christen discovered this truism after her own surprising heart-connection with Maddy but can she now accept Morgan, her new love interest, as he stands before her at the mid-point of his trans-gender journey from female to male?

The Phallus Palace: Female to Male Transsexuals 2003 by Dean Kotula (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

About the Author (Review from Amazon.com)
Dean Kotula has worked as a documentary photographer for twenty years. Dean changed his sex from female to male under the scrutinizing eyes of 2,000 predominantly male shipyard workers while working as a machinist. The ensuing ordeal prompted him to create this book with the hope that educating the public about transsexualism would reduce the animosity and fear surrounding the issue. A native Minnesotan, Dean now resides in Massachusetts where he co-owns an antique business.

Book Description
The Phallus Palace is a bold approach to the subject of female to male transsexuals (FTMs). Personal testaments from FTMs and contributions from a host of others place the subject of transsexualism into a historical, medical, psychological and cultural context. Captivating photographs guide the reader from the FTMs female personae, through surgical operations, to portraits of the men whose self and public identities are finally revealed as one.

As Nature Made Him by John Colapinto

(Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com (click book to be taken to the books area)

From Amazon.com:
Once you begin reading As Nature Made Him, a mesmerizing story of a medical tragedy and its traumatic results, you absolutely won't want to put it down. Following a botched circumcision, a family is convinced to raise their infant son, Bruce, as a girl. They rename the child Brenda and spend the next 14 years trying to transform him into a her. Brenda's childhood reads as one filled with anxiety and loneliness, and her fear and confusion are present on nearly every page concerning her early childhood. Much of her pain is caused by Dr. Money, who is presented as a villainous medical man attempting to coerce an unwilling child to submit to numerous unpleasant treatments.

Reading over interviews and reports of decisions made by this doctor, it's difficult to contain anger at the widespread results of his insistence that natural-born gender can be altered with little more than willpower and hormone treatments. The attempts of his parents, twin brother, and extended family to assist Brenda to be happily female are touching--the sense is overwhelmingly of a family wanting to do "right" while being terribly mislead as to what "right" is for her. As Brenda makes the decision to live life as a male (at age 14), she takes the name David and begins the process of reversing the effects of estrogen treatments. David's ultimately successful life--a solid marriage, honest and close family relationships, and his bravery in making his childhood public--bring an uplifting end to his story. Equally fascinating is the latest segment of the longtime nature/nurture controversy, and the interviews of various psychological researchers and practitioners form a larger framework around David's struggle to live as the gender he was meant to be. --Jill Lightner

Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits CA. 1996 by Loren Cameron (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

Book Description (Review from Amazon.com)
Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits is a unique and extraordinary photographic collection by artist Loren Cameron. Body Alchemy is Loren Cameron's intensely personal photo documentary of female-to-male transsexuals (FTMs). A transsexual himself, Cameron brings a sensitive, sophisticated insider's eye to his subject matter. Loren Cameron's work strikes a warm, familiar tone that invites the viewer's participation - even when the subject matter is quite startling.

Dear Sir or Madam 1999 by Mark Nicholas Alban Rees by Henry Rubin (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

About This Book: (on Amazon) This is the true story of Mark, formerly Brenda, who decided to have major surgery, mastectomy, hysterectomy and phalloplasty, to become a man. It describes his early wishes to change sex, and his struggles, both personal, social and legal, to gain acceptance.

Self Made Men: Identity, Embodiment and Recognition Among Transsexual Men (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

About this Book: (Review from Amazon.com) In Self-Made Men, Henry Rubin explores the production of male identities in the lives of twenty-two FTM transsexuals--people who have changed their sex from female to male. The author relates the compelling personal narratives of his subjects to the historical emergence of FTM as an identity category.

In the interviews that form the heart of the book, the FTMs speak about their struggles to define themselves and their diverse experiences, from the pressures of gender conformity in adolescence to being mistaken for "butch lesbians," from hormone treatments and surgeries to relationships with families, partners, and acquaintances. Their stories of feeling betrayed by their bodies and of undergoing a "second puberty" are vivid and thought-provoking. Throughout the interviews, the subjects' claims to having "core male identities" are remarkably consistent and thus challenge anti-essentialist assumptions in current theories of gender, embodiment, and identity

The Transsexual Phenomenon 1966 by Harry Benjamin (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

Reader Review from Washington (Review from Amazon.com): Although there are many in-depth and up-to-date books and information out there today, this book basically started today's awareness of the problem and laid the groundwork for standardized treatment of the transsexual. It is still a helpful reference but also provides a historical look into transsexualism. Highly recommended.

Transmen and FTMs: Identities, Bodies, Genders, and Sexualities 1999 by James Cromwell (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

(Review from Amazon.com): Cromwell provides an interesting ethnography of female men from a FTM perspective in a time when the transgender community is calling for scholarship about transpeople by transcholars. He gives an insider's perspective of a fairly homogenous type of group of transmen that capably provides a few new glimpses into female men's stories.

FTM: Female To Male Transsexuals in Society 1997 by Holly Devor (Non-Fiction) Available at Amazon.com

(Review from Amazon.com): "The book alternates specialized academic analysis with the individual studies, and should be of interest to both professionals who work with transsexuals and scholars interested in gender theory." - Choice

"Writing with an intelligent and accessible style, Dr. Devor balances exposition, analysis, and excerpts from her subjects' interviews to present a coherent picture of what social life is like for FTMs as they find their identity and learn about themselves." - Jamison "James" Green

The author of the groundbreaking book Gender Blending here turns her attention to the little-known world of female-to-male transsexuals. Who are they? How do they come to know themselves as transsexual? What do they do about it? How do their families cope? Who loves them? What does it mean for the rest of us?

Translegalities: A Legal Guide for FTMs by Spencer Bergstedt Available at: www.spencelaw.com

Transsexual Workers: An Employers Guide by Janis Walworth Available at Amazon.com

(Review from Amazon.com): This book represents a major advance in the field of transgender employment. Transsexuals who anticipate transitioning on the job will find this book an excellent resource to place in the hands of their managers, human resource personnel, and others who will be making decisions that affect their work lives. For the manager facing for the first time the challenge of accommodating a worker's transition from one sex to the other, this book will be a lifesaver. In a concise and readable format, it provides a basic understanding of transsexualism and the steps involved in the transition process. It goes on to address issues that may arise in a wide range of workplace scenarios. The glossary acquaints the reader with a basic vocabulary of terms used in discussing transgender topics, and the resource section points the way to additional information. More complete than the chapters and booklets heretofore available, this is the first book devoted entirely to the topic of managing transition on the job.

True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism - For Families, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals by Mildred L. Brown/Chloe Ann Rounsley Available at Amazon.com

(Review from Amazon.com): Filled with wisdom and understanding, this groundbreaking book paints a vivid portrait of conflicts transsexuals face on a daily basis--and the courage they must summon as they struggle to reveal their true being to themselves and others. True Selves offers valuable guidance for those who are struggling to understand these people and their situations.

Using real life stories, actual letters, and other compelling examples, the authors give a clear understanding of what it means to be transsexual. They also give other useful advice, including how to deal compassionately with these commonly misunderstood individuals--by keeping an open heart, communicating fears, pain and support, respecting choices.

Trans Forming Families: Real Stories About Transgendered Loved Ones, 2nd Edition by Mary Boenke Available at Amazon.com

(Review from Amazon.com):
This is a family oriented book published especially for families, friends, and others interested in understanding and learning about transgendered persons. The first edition sold out; this is the expanded second edition, published in 2003. It deals with all ages and types of transgender - FTM, MTF, Intersex, cross dressing, and androgeny. It is an ideal first book for families who want to understand.

There are seven sections. Section one is comprised of stories written by parents of very young gender variant children, i.e pre-schoolers and school age children who insisted they were not the gender their parents thought they were. Section two is by parents of adult transgenders, each describing their child's coming out process and the journey this revelation started for both the adult child AND the whole family. Section three includes stories by spouses and partners who have weathered the trauma of living through a gender change with their most significant other. Section four is by strategic others - grandparents, siblings, friends, children of trangenders.

What Took You So Long: A Girls Journey to Manhood, Raymond Thompson with Kittey Sewell, Penguin Books, London. (Non-Fiction)

(Review from Amazon.com): Raymond Thomson tells the story of his life. He was born a girl into a close-knit family in a working-class community in South Wales. He realized by the age of five that he was "in the wrong body". A childhood lived in a state on misery was followed by an adolescence full of confusion and rage. He recounts his experiences from the painful battles with his family to his time in Borstal and then prison. His relationships with women are described, including his love for Loretta, the woman who he hoped would be there at the end of his journey. Reader comment: An excellent account of being a FTM who has a hard time, and ends up on the wrong side of the law, in prison.
